Throughout this year’s ROOTS delegates were shown how caring for the environment is an integral part of being ‘Wholly Holy’, the theme of this year’s event. Whether they saw the video “This is our Earth” during the sessions, walked through the giant EARTH doorway into the exhibition space or wore their EARTH badge with pride, everyone was faced with the fact that our climate is changing, the poorest people are the worst affected and it is up to us to do something about it – a challenge that the ROOTS delegates accepted with enthusiasm and passion. £10,000 was raised over the weekend for The Salvation Army’s EARTH projects, hundreds of copies of the EARTH resource pack, featuring videos, powerpoints and resources for all ages, were given out and hopefully many more people will now be engaged with this issue as the delegates share what it means to LOVE PEOPLE and LOVE THE EARTH with their friends, neighbours and colleagues.

You can find out more about how to get involved in The Salvation Army’s EARTH project by visiting www.salvationarmy.org.uk/earth.

It’s expected that when we return to work after the Easter break (assuming we can get to work with the train strikes!) that Gorden Brown will announce the election and campaigning will get underway in earnest in April.

Politics will play a part in the ROOTS programme as we launch our new Political Holiness Dimension. We’re delighted that Andy Flannagan from the Christian Socialist Movement is coming to speak at the Event and we are hoping to invite representatives from other parties to join us.

We invited Tony Blair to come and be interviewed. Having set up the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, his views on political holiness were something we were interested to hear. Unfortunately he is unable to join us but he did agree to be interviewed beforehand and help us explore the subject. Click here to view the article which appeared recently in the Salvationist Magazine.

Have a Happy Easter.

ROOTS is delighted to be welcoming back The Lacey Theatre Company. As well as performing in our celebration programme we will have a special performance from Elin Jeynes of The Story So Far.

A 12-year-old boy goes missing for three days and ends up being found in the most unlikely of places – but what was he doing there? And why? This exciting show explores the person and character of the world’s greatest storyteller, but who was he? How might he have told the great stories of old? And how come he didn’t lose the plot?

Devised and performed by Elin Jeynes, directed and co-written by Steve Stickley, this inventive and charming exploration reflects just one person’s creative response to who Jesus was. But the narrative leads to a question: how could any of us tell it?

Expect an explosion of characters, comedy, music, poetry and visuals through an exciting journey not to be missed.

The International Spiritual Life Commission calls us to “live out the doctrine of holiness in all its dimensions – personal, relational, social and political.” New to the ROOTS Programme, our morning Dimensions sessions will further explore the Bible Study teaching, looking at the subject of holiness through the lens of Personal, Relational, Social and Political Holiness.

Each Dimension will be repeated on Sunday giving you the chance to attend two of the four subjects.

Click on the links for each of our Dimensions speakers to find out more about them.

Personal Holiness

If we are to be wholly infectious then we must consider our own personal holiness walk with God. Lieut-Colonel Janet Munn will explore this key dimension with space for personal reflection and response.

Relational Holiness

In an increasingly sexualised and individually orientated world keeping our relationships holy is of vital importance both for ourselves, our partners, friends and wider community. As we look to explore how Christian holiness should infuse and impact those around us we want to explore how Christian values and lifestyle choices can offer help to broken relationships and provide a framework for building healthy strong relationships that benefit both the individuals involved and those around them.

These sessions, led by Rachel and Jason Gardner, will explore all types of relationships including dating relationships, marriage, family and friendships.

Social Holiness

The Salvation Army continues to build on its amazing heritage as a holiness movement that lives out the doctrine of holiness in the social dimension. A call for the church to live out it’s faith in the public square has driven the previous two ROOTS programmes: “Others” in 2007, “Going Public” in 2008, and the subject remains central to the ROOTS Conferences.

Captain Nick Coke will further explore this key theme drawing on real life examples, both from his own appointment in Stepney in the East End of London, and through interviews with two key practitioners:

Saturday – Adam Bonner is the Community Mission Advisor for Liveability Community Mission. Liveability has been involved in supporting urban mission for over 160 years and are passionate about what the Church can do to combat the poverty, isolation and despair that scar our communities.

Sunday – Rev Angus Richie is the director of The Contextual Theology Centre based in the East End of London. The Centre brings Christian faith into an active dialogue with the context in which people live and work, primarily through congregational participation in community organisation. He is also the founder of the Jellicoe Community, a community of interns who live and work in East London.

Political Holiness

At the time of writing it seems very likely that we will be returning from Southport just in time to head to the polling booth, making ROOTS a vital time to unpack how to live out the doctrine of holiness in the Spiritual dimension.

Hosted by Commissioner Elizabeth Matear with teaching from Andy Flannagan, Director, this session will explore what ‘political holiness’ may mean. How is political involvement a dimension of holiness? How can we use our right to vote effectively to support our country?
